Patrick Legant founded Patrick Legant - Art Consultancy in 2011 as a leading, independent, international, expertise-driven advisory service focusing on European and American art of the 19th and 20th Century and German & Austrian Expressionism with the aim of giving the best and most impartial advice possible. He is the only independent advisor of his generation who specialises in Impressionist & Modern, 20th Century European & American as well as German & Austrian Expressionist art.

Patrick Legant is a Board Member of the Association of Professional Art Advisors (APAA). As a member of the APAA, he is one of the most trusted and experienced art advisors in his field worldwide. The Association is the only standard setting organisation for art advisors, vetting its members thoroughly and defining a clear code of ethics.

His consultancy firm is based in London. He is working independently with individual collectors, estates and institutions worldwide on a highly personal level, building and expanding collections in his field of expertise as well as helping with the sale of individual works or entire collections. He is also a council member of GLG, the world's largest network for one-on-one professional expertise.

Previously, Patrick Legant spent ten years working at Sotheby's in London. He was a Senior Director in the Impressionist and Modern Art Department, Director of German and Austrian Art and a provenance researcher in the Restitution Department. During those years he was responsible for the sale of record setting collections and works of art by artists such as Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Wilhelm Lehmbruck and Emil Nolde, among others.

All his years of experience in the international art world have given him a unique knowledge and understanding of the art market, and access to a global network of collectors, curators and dealers which he puts to the service of his clients.

Patrick Legant studied History of Art in Vienna and Canterbury (UK), and completed his MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. He was taught by the late John House, one of the preeminent scholars in the field of 19th century art history. Further, Patrick Legant is frequently featured as an expert in his field and a close observer of the art market in international news media such as The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, The Telegraph, Handelsblatt, The New York Times, Guardian, Apollo MagazineWeltkunst, Milieu Magazine and The Antiques Trade Gazette. He is a contributing writer for the acclaimed Art Market Monitor.

Furthermore, Patrick Legant is a regular donor to the Courtauld Annual Fund, a member of the Friends of the Kunstmuseum Berne and the Morgan Library in New York as well as a Patron of the collection of the Leopold Museum in Vienna. Patrick Legant has been accepted as a member of Chatham House, the London Think Tank for International Affairs. 



Co-hosting a Seminar on Art Market Standards:
Patrick Legant Art Consultancy is co-hosting an APAA seminar focusing on Art Market Standards: Contemporary Art - A Conservational Challenge. The seminar will be held at the offices of Mishcon de Reya in London on

Loan Arrangement:
Patrick Legant Art Consultancy was entrusted with the arrangement of the loan of an important work by Paul Klee from a private collection for the exhibition "Paul Klee... make visible!" at the Paul Klee Centre in Berne.


Auction: Advising a Private Collection
Patrick Legant Art Consultancy advised a private collection on the sale of works in the June 2017 Impressionist & Modern Art auctions. As a result of his expertise, market knowledge and industry experience, he was able to advise on the best timing, estimate strategy, marketing and context of sale. He lead the negotiations for the most advantageous consignmnent terms. The auction realised for his clients a more than 110% result against the initially expected sale result! Two of the works were among the top selling works in the sale.


Co-hosting a Seminar on Art Market Standards:
Patrick Legant Art Consultancy co-hosted an APAA seminar focusing on Art Market Standards: The Fine Art of Due Diligence. The seminar was held at the offices of Stonehage Fleming in London in June 2017. Speakers included, among others, Elizabeth Gorayeb, Executive Director of the Wildenstein Plattner Institute, New York, and Tarnya Cooper, Curatorial Director at the National Portrait Gallery, London.

Patrick Legant Art Consultancy was entrusted with the arrangement of the loan of an important work by Francis Bacon from a private collection for the exhibition "Francis Bacon: From Picasso to Velázquez" at the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain. 


Co-hosting a Seminar on Art Market Standards:
Patrick Legant Art Consultancy co-hosted a RICS & APAA seminar focusing on Art Market Standards: Code of Conduct and Ethics in the Art Market. The seminar was held in London in October 2016.

Patrick Legant Art Consultancy was entrusted with the arrangement of the loan of an important work by Paul Klee from a private collection for the exhibition "Paul Klee: I am a Painter" at the Paul Klee Centre in Berne. 


Public Speaking Engagement: C/M/S/ Hasche Sigle, Berlin
Patrick Legant was the keynote speaker at the 2016 C/M/S Hasche Sigle conference "Kunst Sammeln und Bewahren IV - Artists’ and Collectors’ Estates". This event brought together leading experts to discuss the cultural, art market, legal and tax related implications of the topic. Patrick Legant was invited to give an insight into the understanding of the relationship between collectors’  estates and the art market and the value of an independent advisor in this situation - a subject in which he has more than fifteen years of professional experience. 


Long-term Museum Loan Arrangement:
Patrick Legant Art Consultancy was entrusted with the arrangement of an important Francis Bacon painting as a long-term loan to a major European museum on behalf of a private collection.

Auctions: Advising a Private American Collection
Patrick Legant Art Consultancy was entrusted with advising a private American collector on the sale of a group of works at auction at the end of 2015. After a detailed and professionally informed review of the art market situation, it was decided to offer the works at auction in Europe. That way, one of the works made the highest price ever achieved for this kind of work by the artist at auction. The expected low estimate was more than doubled.

As a result of his expertise, market knowledge and industry experience, he was able to advise on the time and context of sale and lead the negotiations for the most advantageous consignmnent terms. The auction realised for his clients an almost 65% increase on their initially expected net-sale result!


Advice on a Private Treaty to a Museum
Patrick Legant Art Consultancy successfully advised on and negotiated a private sale of an important German Expressionist work to a European museum on behalf of a US collector.


Vetting
Patrick Legant is a selected member of the '20th Century Art' Vetting Committee of the Masterpiece Art Fair in London.


Exhibition Project: Egon Schiele, Courtauld Gallery, London
Patrick Legant is proud to have been able to support the exhibition Egon Schiele - The Radical Nude, the first solo Egon Schiele museum exhibition in the UK, through important loan arrangements.


Institutional Project: New Walk Museum, Leicester (UK)
Patrick Legant - Art Consultancy was commissioned to complete a report on the important Expressionist and Early 20th Century German Art Collection of the New Walk Museum in Leicester and its future development. It is the largest collection of German art of that period in the United Kingdom. Read more here.

Public Speaking Engagement: C/M/S/ Hasche Sigle, Berlin
Patrick Legant was a contributor at the 2014 C/M/S Hasche Sigle conference "Kunst Sammeln und Bewahren II - The Worth of Art". This event brought together leading experts and collectors to discuss the notion of the 'Worth of Art' in cultural, art market, legal and tax related terms. Patrick Legant was invited to give an insight into the understanding of the value of art focusing on the global art market, the art object and the price - a subject in which he has more than fifteen years of professional experience. He gave an overview of and insight into the understanding of the value of art and pointed out the importance of necessary expertise and professional experience for valuing art.

Patrick Legant was invited by the Diettanti - Studies in Art Group, London, as an expert in his field to give a talk on "A French-American Connection - The Paris Art World of the 1870s" in Spring 2015.
